The notes on this page may answer some of your questions but for a comprehensive explanation of how to acquire a Wheelyboat and the help we can offer download our Wheelyboat Project Guidance Notes.
The Trust's role is to help and encourage venues open to the public acquire Wheelyboats for their disabled visitors and to help groups and organisations acquire Wheelyboats for their own use. As long as disabled people are the Wheelyboat’s principal beneficiaries, we will raise funds to substantially bring down the cost of purchasing a Wheelyboat, sometimes by as much as 50%. It is not our policy to give Wheelyboats away as we believe it is important that the operator demonstrates a financial commitment to the project. However, we recognise that Wheelyboats are an expensive purchase and therefore through our fundraising efforts we endeavour to make their acquisition affordable thus maximising their availability.
New Wheelyboats can be supplied zero rated for VAT if they are purchased by qualifying individuals or charities. If the Wheelyboat operator is neither a charity or registered for VAT, donations towards their Wheelyboat made by third parties directly to the Trust can be used to discount the price of the Wheelyboat before VAT is applied thus reducing the VAT liability.
We encourage foreign venues to acquire Wheelyboats and a number operate in Ireland and Denmark.
Individuals may purchase Wheelyboats for their own use.
Wheelyboats, particularly the Coulam Wheelyboat V20, have a significant role beyond providing access to the water for disabled people and are used as work boats, rescue and support craft and for general pleasure use. Sales are welcomed by the Trust as they generate important revenue to cover the charity’s running costs.
Please note that the Trust’s policy of fundraising to discount the cost of a Wheelyboat does not apply to purchases from overseas, by individuals and for non-disabled use.
